Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, often thought to be linked to genetic factors. Environmental influences, such as exposure to toxins during pregnancy, low birth weight, or premature birth, may also play a role. ADHD is not caused by parenting or lifestyle but rather is related to how the brain develops and functions.

Symptoms
ADHD symptoms generally fall into two main categories: inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. These symptoms can affect daily life, relationships, and academic or work performance.

  • Inattention: Difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, being easily distracted, trouble following instructions, and struggling with organisation.
  • Hyperactivity: Excessive movement, fidgeting, restlessness, and difficulty remaining seated or quiet in situations where it’s expected.
  • Impulsivity: Acting without thinking, interrupting others, trouble waiting for turns, and a tendency to make hasty decisions.

ADHD can present differently in each individual. Some may primarily struggle with inattention, others with hyperactivity-impulsivity, and some with a combination of both.

Coping Strategies

  • Create Structure: Establishing routines and using planners or reminders can help manage daily responsibilities.
  • Break Tasks into Steps: Focusing on small steps rather than large tasks can prevent feeling overwhelmed.
  • Mindfulness and Relaxation: Techniques like deep breathing and mindfulness exercises can help manage impulsivity and hyperactivity.
  • Exercise: Physical activity is known to improve focus and reduce restlessness, making it especially helpful for those with ADHD.
  • Set Clear Goals: Breaking goals down into manageable, measurable steps can help maintain motivation and focus.

Where to Find Help

  • ADHD Foundation: This UK-based charity offers support, resources, and training for individuals and families affected by ADHD.
  • Counselling and Therapy: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can provide tools for managing ADHD symptoms, especially for adults.
  • Medication: In some cases, medication prescribed by a healthcare professional can help manage ADHD symptoms. Options should always be discussed with a doctor.
  • Support Groups: Peer support groups provide a space for individuals with ADHD to connect, share experiences, and gain advice.
