Increased Mental Health Among the Workforce

The Hidden Cost of Workplace Mental Health

Mental health is a critical issue impacting the workforce, with 1 in 4 people in the UK experiencing a mental health problem annually (Mind, 2022). Among staff, 1 in 5 report that work-related stress is making them ill, and 57% of UK sick days are caused by stress. The effects are particularly severe among younger employees, with 40 million disability cases in 20-29-year-olds attributed to mental health issues in 2022. The financial implications are substantial, with mental health problems costing the UK economy at least £117.9 billion annually (London School of Economics, 2023). Employees diagnosed with depression lose, on average, 58 days of productivity each year, amounting to a 24% loss in productivity (TELUS Health, December 2023).

Pressure vs Stress: What’s the Difference?

Pressure and stress are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings, especially in the context of work and mental health. Understanding the difference can help us manage both more effectively.

Pressure

  • Definition: Pressure is the external demand or expectation placed on us to perform, meet deadlines, or achieve goals.
  • Nature: It’s external—coming from work, deadlines, family, or other responsibilities.
  • Impact: Pressure can be motivating in small doses, pushing us to perform at our best, focus, and achieve results.
  • Example: A project deadline at work or preparing for an important presentation.

Stress

  • Definition: Stress is our internal reaction to pressure or challenging situations when we feel unable to cope with the demands.
  • Nature: It’s internal—based on how we perceive and respond to pressure.
  • Impact: Stress can be overwhelming and lead to emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion if prolonged.
  • Example: Feeling anxious, irritable, or unable to sleep because of overwhelming work responsibilities.
