Self harm

Self-harm is often a coping mechanism for dealing with overwhelming emotions or a sense of control. It can stem from emotional distress, trauma, or low self-esteem.

Symptoms

  • Physical signs like cuts, burns, or bruises
  • Hiding parts of the body to cover injuries
  • Increased isolation or withdrawal from social activities

Coping Strategies

  • Alternative Outlets: Find other ways to express emotions, like drawing, writing, or using a stress ball.
  • Distraction Techniques: Use techniques like holding ice or snapping a rubber band to redirect urges.
  • Build a Support Network: Talk to friends, family, or professionals who can provide encouragement and understanding.

Where to Find Help

  • Counselling Services: Therapists trained in self-harm can help develop healthier coping mechanisms.
  • Helplines: Call or text helplines like Shout to talk to someone when you feel the urge to self-harm.
